Rhode Island – Self Storage Act Amended

On June 20, 2025 the Governor approved a bill into law that goes into effect immediately, changing the Rhode Island Self Storage Statute.

The summary of those changes are the law removes the service requirements and/or the additional advertising if you are not able to personally service or obtain certified mail service of the 2nd Default Notice.

Further, the revisions also allows you to give written notice of a change of the website where you would be running your online lien sales, instead of having to keep it only in the Rental Agreement.

The minimum sale date must be no sooner than 60 days after occupant default, and 15 days after final publication of the lien notice advertising.

It is important you consult with your own legal counsel to understand the nuances of these changes and to make the necessary changes to your Rental Agreement, immediately.

Congratulations to the Rhode Island Self Storage Association and the National SSA on this significant change that will result in a large amount of savings to the operators in Rhode Island.
