Maine – Self Storage Act Amended

Governor Mills signed into law modernization of the Maine Self Storage lien laws. These changes do not take effect until September 24, 2025.

Lease changes include creating a four part definition of abandoned leased spaces, allowing rental agreements to be delivered electronically, as well as a presumption of signature and acceptance of the rental agreement after passage of a period of time or payment of Rent, if the occupant does not sign the Rental agreement. It further explicitly authorizes online auctions and gives the operator the opportunity to designate a different address, other than the Facility for service of notice on the operator.

It is important you consult with your own legal counsel to understand the nuances of these changes and to make the necessary changes to your Rental Agreement, immediately.

Congratulations to the Maine Self Storage Association and the National SSA on this significant change that will result in a large amount of savings to the operators in Maine.
